Which country is home to the ancient city of Qatna, a Bronze Age kingdom near modern Homs?

The story behind the answer

Syria is home to the ancient city of Qatna, a Bronze Age kingdom near modern Homs.

Qatna was an important ancient city in western Syria, positioned near routes connecting the Levant, Mesopotamia, and the Mediterranean. Its strategic location helped it become the center of a regional kingdom during the second millennium BCE.

Excavations at Tell Mishrifeh have revealed monumental buildings, city defenses, royal archives, and a richly furnished royal tomb. Cuneiform tablets discovered in the palace provide evidence about diplomacy, administration, and international relationships among Bronze Age rulers. The site’s contacts extended to major powers including Mari, Babylon, and Egypt.

Qatna is not the same place as modern Homs, although the ancient site is located in the wider Homs region. The city was destroyed around the late Bronze Age collapse, after which its political importance diminished. Archaeological work at Qatna has helped reconstruct the interconnected diplomatic world of Bronze Age Syria.
