The ancient city of Miletus is in Turkey.
Miletus was an ancient Greek city on the western coast of Anatolia, in modern Turkey's Aydın Province. It stood near the mouth of the Maeander River and became an important port, although changes in the river's course eventually left the ruins inland.
Miletus was a major center of philosophy, science, urban planning, and colonization. Thales of Miletus, often regarded as one of the first Greek philosophers, is traditionally associated with the city. Anaximander and Anaximenes, other early thinkers, also came from Miletus.
The city was rebuilt in a planned grid after the Persian Wars, a layout associated with Hippodamus of Miletus. Visitors can see the Great Theatre, baths, and other remains. Miletus is sometimes confused with Ephesus, another famous ancient site in western Turkey, but they were separate cities.
