Which country is home to the ancient city of Ephesus, famed for the Temple of Artemis?

The story behind the answer

Turkey is home to Ephesus, the ancient city famed for the Temple of Artemis.

Ephesus is an archaeological site near modern Selçuk in İzmir Province, on Turkey’s Aegean coast. It became one of the major cities of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, with theatres, libraries, streets, baths, and temples.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Only limited remains of the temple survive today, while much of the visible archaeological city belongs to later Greek and Roman phases.

Ephesus was also an important early Christian centre. The city is associated with the Apostle Paul and with the Council of Ephesus, held in 431 CE. Its ancient harbour gradually silted up, helping explain why the ruins now stand inland from the modern coastline.
