Which country is crossed by the Equator for the greatest distance?

The story behind the answer

Brazil is the country crossed by the Equator for the greatest distance.

The Equator crosses northern Brazil from the Atlantic coast through the Amazon region. Because Brazil is much larger than the other countries on the Equator, the line travels farther across its territory than it does across any other sovereign state.

The Equator also crosses Ecuador, Colombia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Indonesia and the Maldives, depending on how territorial waters are counted. Brazil is the largest of the land countries in this group.

The Equator is the imaginary circle at 0 degrees latitude, dividing Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In Brazil, it passes through the state of Amapá and near the city of Macapá.
