Mario Vargas Llosa was originally from Peru.
He was born in Arequipa, southern Peru, in 1936 and became one of the country’s most internationally recognized novelists. His fiction often examines Peruvian society, political power, class, military institutions, and the conflict between individual freedom and authoritarian systems.
Vargas Llosa rose to prominence during the Latin American literary boom of the 1960s. Important early novels include The Time of the Hero, The Green House, and Conversation in the Cathedral. Although he later wrote about other countries and held Spanish citizenship from 1993, his literary origins and national identity are firmly connected to Peru.
He also entered public life, running for president of Peru in 1990. In 2010, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his writing about structures of power and resistance. Mexico, Chile, and Argentina are all associated with major Latin American authors, but none is his country of origin.
