Which Guatemalan author wrote the novel 'El señor presidente'?

Miguel Ángel Asturias wrote the novel “El Señor Presidente.” The Guatemalan author completed the Spanish-language work in 1933, but it was not published until 1946 in Mexico.

The novel portrays life under an unnamed, omnipresent dictator whose rule is maintained through fear, surveillance, torture, propaganda, and arbitrary punishment. Although the setting is not explicitly identified as Guatemala, the title character was strongly inspired by Manuel Estrada Cabrera, who ruled Guatemala from 1898 to 1920.

Asturias began writing the book while studying law in Guatemala and continued it in Paris, where he studied anthropology at the Sorbonne and encountered Surrealist ideas. The novel became a landmark of the Latin American “dictator novel” and made early use of techniques later associated with magic realism.

A common mix-up is attributing the book to Alejo Carpentier, another major Latin American writer linked to innovative narrative and political themes. Asturias himself received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1967.
