South Africa hosted the last Formula One World Championship race held in Africa, the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. The race took place on 14 March 1993 and remains the most recent World Championship Grand Prix staged on the continent.
The event was the 33rd South African Grand Prix and opened the 1993 season. Alain Prost won for Williams-Renault after starting from pole, with Ayrton Senna finishing second for McLaren-Ford and Mark Blundell taking third for Ligier-Renault. The race also marked Sauber’s Formula One debut.
South Africa had been a regular part of the championship from 1962, although the race was suspended after the controversial 1985 event because of international opposition to apartheid. It returned to the calendar in 1992 after political changes and the end of apartheid-era isolation.
The 1993 race was not merely the latest South African event at the time; it became the last African round of the Formula One World Championship. Later proposals to revive a South African Grand Prix did not produce another World Championship race.
