Which country hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

The story behind the answer

Qatar hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Middle Eastern country to stage football’s men’s global championship. The tournament took place from 20 November to 18 December 2022.

The event used eight stadiums in and around Doha, including Lusail Stadium, which hosted the final. Because Qatar’s summer temperatures can be extremely high, the competition was held in November and December rather than during the traditional June-July window.

Argentina won the final against France on penalties after a 3–3 draw following extra time. Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, while Kylian Mbappé received the Golden Boot for leading scorer.

Qatar’s compact geography allowed supporters to stay in one base and attend matches in different venues. The tournament also prompted intense discussion about labour rights, migration, and human rights.
