China hosted the 2008 Olympic badminton tournament at the Beijing Games.
The badminton events were played in Beijing at the Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium. China entered the home Olympics as one of the sport's strongest nations and won several medals across the five events.
The 2008 tournament included men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles. China won the men's singles title through Lin Dan and the women's singles title through Zhang Ning, who successfully defended her 2004 Olympic championship.
Olympic badminton is played in an indoor hall because air movement can dramatically affect a shuttlecock's flight. The Beijing venue therefore provided a controlled environment for the competition. Hosting the Games and winning major titles made 2008 a particularly significant Olympics for Chinese badminton.
