Which country has the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls?

The story behind the answer

Venezuela is home to Angel Falls, the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall.

Angel Falls drops 979 metres from the Auyán-tepui plateau in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park. Its longest uninterrupted plunge is about 807 metres. The waterfall is fed by the Churún River, which flows over the edge of the flat-topped mountain before breaking into mist and smaller cascades.

The falls are located in a remote part of southeastern Venezuela, within the Guiana Highlands. The surrounding tepuis are ancient sandstone formations with steep cliffs and unusual ecosystems. Canaima National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The waterfall is named after American aviator Jimmie Angel, who flew over it in 1933. Angel later landed his plane on Auyán-tepui in 1937, but the aircraft became stuck there and had to be removed years later. Indigenous Pemón people knew the waterfall and the mountain long before Angel’s flight. In Pemón tradition, Auyán-tepui has cultural significance, and the waterfall is often called Kerepakupai Merú in the Indigenous language.
