Which country has the most bicycles per capita?
Answer
Netherlands
Answer
Netherlands
The Netherlands has the most bicycles per capita. Estimates commonly place the country’s bicycle stock at roughly 1.3 bicycles per inhabitant, giving it more bicycles than residents.
That abundance grew from the bicycle’s role as ordinary transportation rather than merely recreation. Dutch cities invested heavily in cycle tracks, traffic-calmed streets, secure parking and junction designs that make cycling practical for children, commuters and older adults. By 1911, the Netherlands already had the highest bicycle ownership per person in Europe.
The figure can vary because countries count bicycles differently and some estimates include unused or privately owned bikes. The question is about bicycles per person, not total bicycles: China has a much larger fleet overall because of its population. It is also easy to confuse ownership with cycling frequency or bicycle-trip share; the Netherlands leads prominently on those measures too, but they are not identical statistics.
