Russia has the largest total area among countries bordering the Baltic Sea.
Russia’s Baltic coastline is concentrated around the Gulf of Finland and the exclave of Kaliningrad. Although only a small part of Russia borders the Baltic, the country’s overall area is greater than that of every other Baltic coastal state.
The Baltic Sea is also bordered by Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Denmark. These countries vary greatly in size, with Russia standing apart because its territory extends across Europe and Asia.
Kaliningrad is separated from Russia’s main territory by other countries but remains a Russian federal subject. Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, lies at the eastern end of the Gulf of Finland and is an important Baltic port.
