The Netherlands have finished as World Cup runners-up three times without ever winning the tournament. Their final defeats came in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
The Dutch first reached the final in 1974, when Johan Cruyff’s team lost 2–1 to host nation West Germany. Four years later, the Netherlands again finished second, losing 3–1 after extra time to Argentina in Buenos Aires. Their third final appearance came in 2010, when Spain won 1–0 through Andrés Iniesta’s extra-time goal.
This record is distinct from simply having multiple final appearances: the Netherlands have never lifted the World Cup despite reaching three finals. They also finished third in 2014, their best result outside those finals. In 2022, Argentina eliminated them in the quarter-finals after a penalty shoot-out.
Hungary is another prominent team with multiple final defeats, but it reached the final twice, in 1938 and 1954. Sweden and the former Czechoslovakia each reached one or two finals, so neither matches the Netherlands’ total of three runner-up finishes.
