Which country had the world’s largest total installed wind-power capacity in 2023?

The story behind the answer

China had the world’s largest total installed wind-power capacity in 2023.

China’s wind industry expanded rapidly after the country introduced policies supporting large-scale renewable generation and domestic turbine manufacturing. Its land area, long coastlines, and strong industrial supply chain enabled construction of extensive onshore and offshore wind projects.

China leads both onshore and offshore wind deployment. Installed capacity measures the maximum rated output of turbines, not the amount of electricity actually produced at every moment. Because wind conditions vary, annual generation is lower than the capacity figure multiplied by every hour of the year.

The United States, Germany, and India are also major wind-power countries, but their installed totals are substantially smaller than China’s. China’s leadership is therefore about total capacity, not necessarily the highest percentage of national electricity supplied by wind.
