Which country does the dish biryani come from?

Biryani is generally identified as a dish from India. The modern form developed in the Indian subcontinent from Persian rice-cooking traditions combined with South Asian spices, ingredients, and culinary techniques.

The dish is strongly associated with the Mughal period, when Persian-influenced cooking met the richly seasoned rice dishes of India. Food historians commonly connect its development with royal and military kitchens, where rice, meat, spices, and yogurt-based marinades could be cooked together in a filling one-pot meal.

Biryani is not a single standardized recipe. Hyderabadi biryani, Lucknowi or Awadhi biryani, Kolkata biryani, and Malabar biryani differ in rice preparation, meat, spices, potatoes, and cooking method. The dish also spread throughout South Asia, producing important regional versions in present-day Pakistan, Bangladesh, and elsewhere.
