Which country did Armi Kuusela represent when she won the first Miss Universe in 1952?

The story behind the answer

Armi Kuusela represented Finland when she won the first Miss Universe title in 1952.

Kuusela first won Finland’s national Suomen Neito contest on 24 May 1952, earning the right to compete in the inaugural Miss Universe pageant. The international event took place on 28 June at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium in California, with 30 contestants competing.

At age 17, Kuusela became the first Miss Universe and was crowned with the Romanov Imperial Nuptial Crown, formerly associated with the Russian monarchy. Her victory made her a major Finnish public figure and a goodwill ambassador for the country.

The title’s early history can cause confusion because the first pageant did not follow every later Miss Universe tradition exactly. Kuusela later relinquished the crown shortly before her reign ended to marry Filipino businessman Virgilio Hilario, although the organization did not formally declare the title vacant.
