Which country contains the world's highest capital city, La Paz?

The story behind the answer

Bolivia contains the world's highest national capital city, La Paz.

La Paz sits in a deep valley of the Andes at roughly 3,650 metres above sea level. It is Bolivia's administrative capital and the seat of government, while Sucre is the country's constitutional and judicial capital.

The city developed near the edge of the Altiplano, a high plateau shared mainly by Bolivia and Peru. Its dramatic setting includes steep slopes, surrounding mountain peaks and the nearby urban area of El Alto, which stands even higher.

A common mix-up is calling La Paz Bolivia's only capital. Sucre retains the constitutional title, but La Paz has hosted the executive and legislative branches since the late nineteenth century.
