Which artist painted The Starry Night in 1889 while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum?

The story behind the answer

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in 1889 while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum.

The painting shows a night landscape with a swirling sky above a village, cypress tree, hills, and bright celestial bodies. Van Gogh created it in June 1889 at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France, where he had voluntarily entered the asylum after a period of severe mental-health difficulties. The view combined what he could see from the institution with remembered or imagined elements.

The Starry Night is an oil painting on canvas and is now held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Its expressive brushwork and intense colors have made it one of the most recognizable works in Western art. Van Gogh sold very few paintings during his lifetime, but his reputation grew dramatically after his death in 1890. The work should not be confused with his earlier painting Starry Night Over the Rhône, made in 1888.
