Which country contains the largest share of the Amazon Rainforest?

The story behind the answer

Brazil contains the largest share of the Amazon Rainforest.

Brazil occupies most of the Amazon Basin and is home to the Brazilian Amazon, a vast region that includes the states of Amazonas, Pará, Acre, Rondônia, Roraima, Amapá, and parts of other states. The country’s portion includes the lower Amazon River and many major tributaries.

Brazil’s Amazon region has been central to scientific research, conservation policy, Indigenous rights, agriculture, mining, transport, and debates about deforestation. The city of Manaus, on the Rio Negro, is a major urban centre surrounded by rainforest and river networks.

The Amazon is international rather than exclusively Brazilian. The forest also extends into Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Because ecological boundaries do not follow national borders, conservation efforts involve multiple governments, Indigenous peoples, researchers, and international organisations.
