Which country contains the ancient city of Nineveh, once the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire?

The story behind the answer

The ancient city of Nineveh is in Iraq.

Nineveh stood on the eastern bank of the Tigris River opposite modern Mosul in northern Iraq. It became the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire under King Sennacherib in the seventh century BCE and grew into one of the largest cities of the ancient world.

Sennacherib built major walls, palaces, temples, and waterworks at Nineveh. His palace was decorated with carved reliefs showing military campaigns and royal ceremonies. Ashurbanipal later assembled a celebrated library containing thousands of cuneiform tablets, including a version of the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Nineveh fell to a coalition of Babylonians and Medes in 612 BCE. It is often confused with Babylon, another famous Iraqi city, but Babylon was farther south near modern Hillah. The two cities belonged to different political traditions and had distinct archaeological remains.
