Turkey contains Gordion, the ancient capital of the Phrygian kingdom.
Gordion was located in central Anatolia, near modern Yassıhöyük in Ankara Province. It served as the political centre of Phrygia, an Iron Age kingdom whose most famous legendary ruler was King Midas.
The site includes a fortified settlement, monumental burial mounds, and evidence of long occupation. Archaeologists have identified a large tumulus traditionally associated with Midas, although the exact identity of individuals buried in ancient mounds can be difficult to establish.
Gordion’s importance continued after the height of Phrygian power. It was affected by conflicts involving the Cimmerians, Lydians, Persians, and later Hellenistic kingdoms. Gordion is in modern Turkey, not Greece, despite the region’s extensive later Greek cultural influence.
