Which country contains the ancient city of Dura-Europos on the Euphrates River?

The story behind the answer

Syria contains the ancient city of Dura-Europos on the Euphrates River.

Dura-Europos was an ancient fortified settlement on the Middle Euphrates in modern eastern Syria. It was founded as a Macedonian military colony around 300 BC, after the conquests of Alexander the Great, and later came under Parthian and Roman control.

The site is famous for its unusually diverse religious buildings. Archaeologists found a synagogue with painted wall scenes, a Christian house church, and temples associated with several other traditions. These discoveries provide rare evidence of religious coexistence in a frontier city.

Dura-Europos was abandoned after its capture by the Sasanian Empire in the 3rd century AD. Its dry desert conditions helped preserve wall paintings, inscriptions, and military remains, making it one of the most important archaeological sites of the Roman Near East.
