Which country contains Tanggula railway station, the world’s highest railway station?

The story behind the answer

China contains Tanggula railway station, the world’s highest railway station.

Tanggula railway station stands on the Qinghai–Tibet railway in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. It is situated at about 5,068 metres above sea level, making it the highest railway station in the world. The station is named after the Tanggula Mountains and lies near the railway’s crossing of the Tanggula Pass.

The Qinghai–Tibet railway connects Xining in Qinghai with Lhasa in Tibet. Construction of the railway to Lhasa was completed in 2005, and passenger service began in 2006. Its route crosses the high Tibetan Plateau, where thin air, permafrost and severe weather create major engineering challenges.

Tanggula station is a technical landmark rather than a major urban destination. Trains may pass or stop there, but passengers are generally cautioned about altitude. The station should not be confused with Tanggula railway station’s nearby mountain pass: the pass and the station are related geographically but are distinct features.
