Which Asian country hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul?

The story behind the answer

South Korea hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

The Games ran from 17 September to 2 October 1988 and marked South Korea’s first Olympic hosting. Seoul was selected as host city in 1981, defeating Nagoya, Japan, in the final vote. The event helped showcase South Korea’s rapid economic development and international position.

The 1988 Olympics included 159 events in 23 sports, with more than 8,000 athletes representing 159 nations. The Soviet Union topped the medal table, while the United States sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner became one of the Games’ most prominent athletes.

These Olympics are sometimes confused with the 1988 Winter Olympics, which were held in Calgary, Canada. Seoul hosted the Summer Games; South Korea later hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
