Tanzania contains Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 metres above sea level.
Kilimanjaro is a volcanic massif in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border. It has three principal volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest and contains Uhuru Peak, the summit commonly reached by climbers.
Unlike many famous high mountains, Kilimanjaro stands alone rather than forming part of a major range. Its slopes pass through cultivated land, rainforest, heath, alpine desert, and icy summit terrain. The mountain is dormant rather than extinct: Kibo has not erupted in recorded history, but volcanic activity remains possible. The surrounding Kilimanjaro National Park was established in 1973.
