Japan contains Mount Fuji, the country’s highest mountain.
Mount Fuji rises to 3,776.24 metres on Honshu, Japan’s largest island. It is a nearly symmetrical stratovolcano located about 100 kilometres southwest of Tokyo and is visible from the capital on clear days.
Fuji is an active volcano, although its last confirmed eruption occurred in 1707 during the Edo period. Its distinctive cone has made it a major symbol of Japan and a recurring subject in Japanese art, including Katsushika Hokusai’s famous print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
The mountain is sacred in several Japanese religious traditions and has long attracted pilgrims and climbers. UNESCO added Mount Fuji to its World Heritage List in 2013 as a cultural site.
