Which country contains Mount Ararat, the snow-capped volcanic massif traditionally associated with Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Turkey contains Mount Ararat, the snow-capped volcanic massif traditionally associated with Noah’s Ark. It rises in eastern Turkey near the borders of Iran and Armenia.

Mount Ararat is a compound volcanic mountain made up of Greater Ararat and Lesser Ararat. Greater Ararat reaches 5,137 metres, making it the highest mountain in Turkey. Its summit is permanently snow-covered, and the mountain dominates the surrounding high plateau.

The biblical association comes from the “mountains of Ararat” mentioned in the Book of Genesis, although the text does not explicitly name the modern peak. Mount Ararat is also a major symbol in Armenian culture, even though the mountain lies within present-day Turkey. Political borders and cultural associations therefore often lead to confusion about its location.
