Denmark contains Greenland, the world's largest island that is not a continent.
Greenland is geographically part of North America, but it is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. It lies mostly north of the Arctic Circle between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and its capital is Nuuk.
About 80 percent of Greenland's surface is covered by the Greenland ice sheet. This ice sheet is second in area only to Antarctica's ice sheet and contains enough ice to influence global sea levels significantly if it melted completely.
Greenland gained home rule from Denmark in 1979 and self-government in 2009. The island's government manages many domestic matters, while Denmark retains responsibility for areas including foreign affairs and defence. Greenland is not an independent country.
