The continent devastated by the enormous tsunami in December 2004 was Asia. The disaster began with a massive undersea earthquake off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on December 26, 2004.
The earthquake, estimated at magnitude 9.1–9.3, ruptured a huge section of the boundary between tectonic plates beneath the Indian Ocean. That sudden movement displaced the seafloor and generated tsunami waves that spread across the ocean basin, striking coastal communities in several countries.
Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were among the hardest-hit nations. The waves also reached the Maldives, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and parts of East Africa. Approximately 228,000 people died, making the event the deadliest tsunami in recorded history and one of the worst natural disasters of the modern era.
The event is often called the Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2004 Asian tsunami, or the Boxing Day tsunami. “Asia” is the correct continent-level answer, but the destruction affected many individual countries and coastal regions rather than the entire continent uniformly. The disaster also led to expanded tsunami-warning systems throughout the Indian Ocean.
