Africa is the only continent crossed by both the Equator and the Prime Meridian.
The Equator crosses Africa through countries including Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. The Prime Meridian crosses Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana.
Their intersection is in the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of Guinea, just offshore from the coast of Ghana. The Prime Meridian is the reference line for 0 degrees longitude, while the Equator marks 0 degrees latitude.
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent after Asia. It spans the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Indian Ocean regions and includes the Sahara, the world's largest hot desert. The fact is sometimes confused by maps centred on Europe or Asia, but no other continent has land crossed by both reference lines.
