Which continent contains the world's largest desert, Antarctica?

The story behind the answer

Antarctica contains the world's largest desert because the continent receives extremely little precipitation.

The Antarctic Desert covers the continent's ice sheet and surrounding polar environment, an area of about 14 million square kilometres. Deserts are defined by low precipitation, not by heat or the presence of sand, so Antarctica qualifies despite being covered in ice.

Some parts of the continent, especially the McMurdo Dry Valleys, are among the driest places on Earth. These valleys receive little snow and have remained largely ice-free because of extremely cold, dry winds.

The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert, but Antarctica is larger overall. The Arctic is also classified as a polar desert, though it is generally treated as a separate region rather than a single continent.
