Ayrton Senna drove for McLaren in all three of his Formula One title seasons: 1988, 1990, and 1991.
Senna joined McLaren in 1988 after six seasons with Toleman and Lotus. In his first year with the team, he won his first Drivers’ Championship in the McLaren MP4/4, sharing the team with Alain Prost. McLaren won 15 of that season’s 16 Grands Prix.
Senna lost the 1989 title to Prost, but remained with McLaren and reclaimed the championship in 1990. He then successfully defended it in 1991, driving McLaren-Honda machinery in both seasons. His three titles were therefore all achieved with the same constructor, even though the car models and Honda engines evolved.
A common mistake is associating Senna’s first championship with Lotus because that team launched his reputation through his early victories. Lotus gave him his first Formula One wins, but McLaren was the constructor behind every championship in his career. He left McLaren for Williams after the 1993 season.
