Which console was Sonic Adventure originally released for?

Sonic Adventure was originally released for the Sega Dreamcast. Developed by Sonic Team, it debuted in Japan on December 23, 1998, as a major showcase for Sega’s new 128-bit console.

The game marked Sonic’s full transition into a large-scale 3D adventure. Players could follow separate storylines for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Big the Cat, and E-102 Gamma, each with different objectives and styles. The plot centers on the Chaos Emeralds and the ancient water creature Chaos, while the game introduced or expanded several ideas that became important to later Sonic titles.

Sonic Adventure was later released in North America on September 9, 1999, and in Europe in October 1999. Sega subsequently updated it as Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut for the GameCube and Windows, and later issued downloadable versions for other platforms. Those ports can make the original system easy to overlook, but the game’s first home-console release was firmly on Dreamcast.
