The first console to receive the original 1996 Tomb Raider game was the Sega Saturn.
Tomb Raider launched on Sega Saturn in October 1996 before versions for MS-DOS and the original PlayStation followed. The game was developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive, whose release strategy helped introduce Lara Croft to a broad audience.
The Saturn version is historically important because Tomb Raider became strongly associated with PlayStation in popular memory, even though Sega’s console received the initial release. The PlayStation edition helped turn the series into one of that platform’s defining action-adventure franchises.
The game’s multi-platform launch is also why different sources emphasize different dates or systems. The key distinction is between the first release and the platforms on which the title later became most famous.
