Which conference issued the declaration demanding Japan’s surrender in July 1945?
Answer
Potsdam Conference
Answer
Potsdam Conference
The Potsdam Conference issued the declaration demanding Japan’s surrender in July 1945.
The conference took place near Berlin from 17 July to 2 August 1945. The United States, the United Kingdom, and China issued the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July, calling for Japan’s unconditional surrender and warning of “prompt and utter destruction” if Japan refused.
The Soviet Union did not initially sign the declaration because it was still formally neutral in the war against Japan. After the Soviet Union entered the war against Japan, it agreed to adhere to the declaration. Japan’s government initially responded with ambiguity, and the Allied powers interpreted its position as rejection.
Japan eventually accepted the declaration’s terms in August. The acceptance led to the emperor’s radio announcement and, later, the formal signing of the Instrument of Surrender aboard USS Missouri.
