Which Chinese leader was one of the three signatories of the Potsdam Declaration in 1945?

The story behind the answer

Chiang Kai-shek was one of the three leaders who issued the Potsdam Declaration in 1945.

The declaration was released on July 26, 1945, by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of China. It called on Japan to surrender unconditionally and warned of “prompt and utter destruction” if Japan refused. Chiang Kai-shek represented China, which had been fighting Japan for years before the wider Pacific War.

U.S. President Harry S. Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill were the other two leaders associated with the declaration. The Soviet Union did not initially sign it because it was still officially neutral in the war against Japan when the document was issued.

The declaration outlined the Allies’ intended terms, including Japan’s disarmament, the removal of militarist influence, and limits on Japanese sovereignty. Japan eventually accepted those terms in August, although the declaration itself did not directly mention the emperor’s future status.
