Which computing company did Oracle acquire in 2010 for approximately $7.4 billion?

The story behind the answer

Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010 for approximately $7.4 billion.

Oracle announced the agreement in April 2009, and the transaction was completed in January 2010 after regulatory review. Sun was a major workstation, server and software company whose technologies included the Solaris operating system, Java and the SPARC processor architecture.

The acquisition gave Oracle control of Java, a programming platform used across web, enterprise and mobile software. It also added hardware and storage products to Oracle's database and business-software portfolio. Oracle promoted the combination as an integrated systems strategy in which one company could supply hardware and software together.

The deal attracted scrutiny from European regulators because of Oracle's ownership of Java and Sun's open-source MySQL database. The European Commission cleared the transaction in January 2010. A frequent error is calling Sun a pure software company: it also designed servers, workstations and processors.
