Which composer wrote the original score for The Hateful Eight?

The story behind the answer

Which composer wrote the original score for The Hateful Eight? Ennio Morricone wrote the original score.

The 2015 western marked Quentin Tarantino’s first film built around a newly composed original score. Morricone wrote about 50 minutes of music, orchestrated and conducted it, and created a chilly, ominous sound for the snowbound mystery. The music intensifies the film’s suspicion and claustrophobia inside Minnie’s Haberdashery.

The collaboration was notable because Morricone had previously expressed reluctance about working with Tarantino after Django Unchained. He ultimately accepted the project, even composing much of the score without seeing the finished film. It was also his first western score in decades, following Buddy Goes West in 1981.

Viewers sometimes assume every piece heard in the film was newly written for it. In fact, the soundtrack also incorporates unused music from Morricone’s score for The Thing, plus songs by The White Stripes, David Hess, and Roy Orbison. Morricone’s work won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
