Alban Berg wrote the opera Lulu, based on Frank Wedekind's plays that inspired Pandora's Box.
Berg's Lulu is a three-act opera adapted from Wedekind's Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box. It follows the same central character as the plays and the 1929 film, but transforms the material into an intensely modernist musical drama. Berg began composing it in the 1920s, and the unfinished third act was completed after his death by Friedrich Cerha.
The opera received its first complete performance in 1979, decades after Berg died. Its music uses twelve-tone techniques while retaining recurring motifs and highly differentiated vocal writing for the characters.
Lulu should not be confused with a direct operatic adaptation of the ancient Greek Pandora myth. Wedekind's Lulu stories use the Pandora name and its symbolism, but their plot belongs to modern European drama rather than classical mythology.
