Tesla’s market value first exceeded $1 trillion after a 2021 Hertz vehicle-order announcement.
On October 25, 2021, Tesla shares rose after Hertz announced an order for 100,000 Tesla vehicles. The rally pushed Tesla’s market capitalization above $1 trillion for the first time. Hertz described the order as part of a plan to build a large electric-vehicle fleet for rental customers.
Tesla was already one of the world’s most valuable automakers before the announcement, supported by rapidly increasing electric-vehicle deliveries and investor confidence in its growth prospects. Crossing $1 trillion placed it in a small group that had previously included companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon.
The Hertz announcement did not mean that Hertz immediately received all 100,000 vehicles. Large fleet orders are delivered over time, and the market reaction reflected expectations about Tesla’s production, demand, and role in electric-vehicle adoption.
