Apple became the first company to reach a US$3 trillion market capitalization in January 2022.
Apple briefly touched the milestone during intraday trading on January 3, 2022, as its share price rose on the Nasdaq. The company’s market value then moved below the level before later closing above it in 2023. This distinction matters because financial milestones can be reported using either an intraday price or an official closing price.
Apple’s valuation reflected more than iPhone sales. Investors also considered its services business, including the App Store, Apple Music, and iCloud, as well as sales of Macs, iPads, and wearables. Its integrated hardware-and-software ecosystem encouraged customers to remain within the Apple product family.
A market capitalization of US$3 trillion does not mean Apple had that amount of cash. It is the combined market value of its outstanding shares. The figure can change every trading day, even when the company has not issued new shares or made a major acquisition.
