Microsoft’s market capitalization exceeded $1 trillion in 2019 after a surge in cloud-computing demand.
Microsoft crossed the $1 trillion valuation level in April 2019 after reporting strong quarterly results. Investor enthusiasm centered on Azure, its cloud-computing platform, along with Office 365, Windows, enterprise software, and gaming.
The company had changed substantially from its earlier dependence on packaged Windows and Office software. Under chief executive Satya Nadella, Microsoft emphasized cloud subscriptions and services, helping make recurring enterprise revenue a central part of its business.
Microsoft was not the first company to reach $1 trillion; Apple and Amazon had already done so. Its 2019 milestone nevertheless demonstrated how cloud infrastructure could drive the valuation of a long-established software company.
