Nvidia became the first chipmaker to reach a US$1 trillion market capitalization in 2023.
Nvidia crossed the US$1 trillion mark in May 2023 after forecasting exceptionally strong demand for data-center products used in artificial-intelligence computing. The forecast helped drive a sharp rise in the company’s share price, lifting the value of its outstanding shares above the threshold.
The milestone reflected Nvidia’s specialized position in accelerated computing. Its graphics processing units can perform many calculations in parallel, making them useful for training large machine-learning models. Nvidia also supplies networking equipment and the CUDA software ecosystem that supports its processors.
Nvidia is often called a chipmaker, but it is primarily a semiconductor designer that relies on manufacturing partners. That distinction matters when comparing it with foundries such as TSMC. The market-cap milestone measured the public value of Nvidia’s equity, not the value of every chip factory involved in production.
