Paytm’s 2021 IPO became the largest public listing in Indian stock-market history at the time.
Paytm, operated by One97 Communications, raised about 18,300 crore Indian rupees in its November 2021 initial public offering. The offering attracted worldwide attention because digital payments had expanded rapidly in India and because Paytm was one of the country’s best-known technology platforms.
The company was founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma in 2010. Its name originated as an abbreviation of “Pay Through Mobile.” Paytm expanded from mobile phone recharges into digital wallets, payments, financial services, ticketing, and commerce.
An IPO’s size refers to the value of shares sold in the offering, not necessarily the company’s eventual market capitalization. Paytm’s listing therefore belongs in the history of major market-capitalization companies and Indian technology finance, even though its share price later moved substantially after listing.
