Saudi Aramco’s 2019 listing briefly gave it a market capitalization above US$2 trillion.
On its second day of trading in December 2019, Saudi Aramco’s share price rose enough to value the company at more than US$2 trillion. The company had been valued at about US$1.7 trillion at its initial offering price, so the early trading rise produced a higher market-capitalization figure.
The event attracted global attention because Saudi Aramco controlled one of the largest and most strategically important oil businesses in the world. The Saudi government remained the dominant shareholder, while the public float was comparatively small.
The word “briefly” matters because market capitalization follows the share price. A company can pass a round-number valuation during trading and then fall below it. This differs from a fixed accounting measure such as paid-in capital or book value.
