Apple’s 2018 share-price surge made it the first public company valued at $1 trillion.
Apple reached the landmark on August 2, 2018, after its shares rose following strong quarterly results and optimistic expectations for future products and services. Because Apple had hundreds of millions of shares outstanding, even small changes in its share price moved billions of dollars in market capitalization.
The company’s valuation was supported by the iPhone, which had become a major global consumer product since its 2007 launch. Investors also increasingly focused on Apple’s services business, including the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and other subscription offerings.
The phrase “first company valued at $1 trillion” means first public company by market capitalization. It does not mean Apple had $1 trillion in revenue, profit, or cash. Those are separate financial measurements.
