Google’s 2015 restructuring created Alphabet Inc. as its parent company.
Google announced the reorganization in August 2015, with Alphabet becoming the new holding company and Google becoming its largest subsidiary. Larry Page became Alphabet’s chief executive, while Sundar Pichai became Google’s CEO.
The structure separated Google’s core internet products—such as Search, YouTube, and Android—from other ventures, including research and investment businesses. Alphabet’s reporting structure also made it easier for investors to distinguish the core advertising business from newer projects.
Google did not disappear as a consumer brand. Alphabet became the publicly traded parent, while Google remained the name of the principal operating company. Alphabet trades on Nasdaq under the symbols GOOGL and GOOG.
