Which company’s 2015 reorganization created Alphabet as its parent company?

The story behind the answer

Google’s 2015 reorganization created Alphabet as its parent company.

In August 2015, Google announced a new corporate structure in which Alphabet Inc. would become the parent company and Google would operate as its largest subsidiary. The restructuring was completed later that year, with Sundar Pichai becoming Google’s chief executive and Larry Page becoming Alphabet’s CEO.

The purpose was to separate Google’s core internet businesses from other ventures, such as life sciences and autonomous-vehicle research. Alphabet could oversee those businesses while Google concentrated on Search, advertising, YouTube, Android, and related products.

Google did not disappear as a brand: it continued to run the company’s best-known consumer services. The stock-market company investors buy is Alphabet, even though many of its products still carry the Google name.
