Alibaba Group’s 2014 stock-market listing raised about $25 billion, making it the largest initial public offering at the time.
Alibaba began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on September 19, 2014. Its offering raised approximately $21.8 billion initially, and an overallotment option later increased the proceeds to about $25 billion. The deal gave Alibaba a market capitalization of roughly $231 billion at its debut.
The company was founded by Jack Ma in 1999 and grew into a major Chinese technology group centered on e-commerce. Its businesses also expanded into cloud computing, digital payments through related services, logistics, and entertainment.
Alibaba’s IPO was larger than Facebook’s 2012 offering and General Motors’ 2010 offering. Saudi Aramco later exceeded it with its 2019 listing, although the final proceeds and the treatment of its overallotment option are reported in different ways.
