JPMorgan Chase was formed in 2000 through the merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan. The transaction combined two major American banking organizations and created one of the world’s largest financial institutions.
J.P. Morgan had deep roots in investment banking and corporate finance, while Chase Manhattan had a major history in commercial banking. Their combination brought those activities under one corporate group. The resulting company was initially named J.P. Morgan Chase, later becoming JPMorgan Chase & Co.
The 2000 merger is distinct from several other large banking combinations associated with the company. In 2004, JPMorgan Chase merged with Bank One, bringing Jamie Dimon into the organization as president and chief operating officer. During the 2008 financial crisis, the company also acquired Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual’s banking operations.
